The Alabama Department of Mental
Health provides services to
children and families across the state through
contracts with community providers, Bryce Hospital
and W.D. Partlow Developmental Center.
Services are coordinated through three service
divisions and the Office of Children’s Services,
which includes Early Intervention Services.
The Office of Children’s Services serves as a central
point of contact for the department with Children’s
Coordinators located in each division and in Early
Intervention. The Division of Mental Illness Services MI
serves children and adolescents who meet the
criteria for Serious Emotional Disturbance.
Services include outpatient treatment, In-home
intervention, case management, day treatment and
residential services. Substance Abuse
treatment services are available through the
Division of Substance Abuse Services SA and include assessment,
outpatient, intensive outpatient, and residential
treatment. Adolescents must meet the criteria
for substance abuse or dependence. Substance
Abuse Prevention Services are also coordinated
within SA, and provide educational
programs and services across the state. Children
with intellectual disabilities are served through the
Division of Intellectual Disability Services ID. A diagnosis of
mental retardation, which includes an adaptive
functioning assessment, is needed for service
eligibility. ADMH provides community-based Early
Intervention services to children, from birth to age
three (3) with developmental disabilities, and their
families, who are enrolled in Alabama’s Early Intervention System,
under the Individuals with Disabilities Education
Act, Part C.
