3rd Annual Friends and Family Walk for Mental Illness Awareness
NAMI - Mobile
8:00 - 10:00 AM
University of South Alabama, Intramural Sports Complex, Mobile 36608
Proceeds from the Gala NAMI Walk will be used to:
- Provide educational and support programs to persons with serious brain disorders and to their families
such as Family-to-Family, Basics, In Our Own Voice and Connections programs
- Support public education programs designed to help eliminate the stigma surrounding severe mental
illness
- Advocate for improved services, housing, rehabilitation and meaningful jobs
- Advocate for nondiscriminatory and equitable federal, state and private sector policies
These efforts are important because millions of Americans (current estimates are one in five families) are living
with mental illness. For example, of all hospital admissions in the U.S. in 2006, 22% involved patients with
mental illness. Even more startling is the impact the total cost mental health has on our society, which is now
estimated at over $200 billion a year in the U.S.
Mental illnesses are biological disorders that can affect people of any age, religion, race or
income. They are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing.
