Losing both of my grandparents was one of the hardest things I’ve ever gone through. The grief cut deep. But art helped me cope—it helped me stay focused, express my emotions, and begin to heal. One of my biggest challenges has been managing my emotions, but with help from the staff at ADS and the coping skills I’ve learned, I’m doing better.

Art gives me a sense of control and independence. I taught myself how to draw when I was little, and I still love painting because it calms me down. I took art classes in grammar and high school, and being part of the art program at ADS has helped me improve even more.

My artwork shows what it feels like when I fall into a dark place—when I forget to walk around the “black hole.” But through creating, I remind myself I’m capable of finding the light again.
