hands and seeds that will grow into a tree

hands and seeds that will grow into a tree

I’m Conner. I am a native of Montgomery, Alabama, and a 12-year-old sixth grader at Alabama Connections Academy.

I have autism, but it doesn’t have me. I face many obstacles being on the spectrum. With private therapy and art, I am working on the best version of me.

I’m a self-taught artist. I like creating abstract art because I can express myself without judgement. A lot of people don’t understand autism or what it means to live with it. I don’t have to try to explain myself when I’m painting.

This is my latest creation, “Bleeding Hands Unity Tree.” It’s mixed media using acrylic paint and paper hand-cutouts. If you are Japanese and you get cut, red blood will come out. If you are Indian and stick your finger with a needle, red blood will come out. We all have red blood. It connects us.

If we come together, we can grow like my unity tree. My tree trunk is fingers from all races. We all matter. We can grow roots to hold each other up and help each other grow. We all bring color and value to this world – like my colorful unity tree.
