I have PTSD and bipolar. I lived in 21 different foster homes growing up. I started learning how to read at age 60 because I am dyslexic. I had medication that induced Parkinson’s disease. I’m a self-taught artist, and I have had some artistic training at SOMI (Survivors of Mental Illness) Club (in Mobile) and at a college in Massachusetts.

Now, I help teach kids on the weekends, and we have banana splits. I also teach people how to cook and paint. God is giving me a gift: cooking. I feel as if I’m starting to live without guilt. I am thankful to be alive. If I don’t create artwork and paint, I don’t feel alive, and I curl up in a ball in the bed and sleep. I’ve gone back to socializing with other people, and I’m starting to draw and paint again. Since my hand injury, I’ve had to relearn how to draw and paint with my left hand.
