My name is David. I have schizophrenia and dyslexia, so please forgive any lack of professionalism. Honestly, I don’t even know what “normal” is. I didn’t learn how to read until second grade. Teachers told my mom to pull me out of school because I would never learn. But I did learn—and I graduated high school.

I’ve been using drugs since I was 13. Eventually, I burned every bridge and ended up homeless. I’ve seen the worst of humanity. I’ve even witnessed someone being killed over ten dollars.

Things began to change when I moved into a group home and started drawing. I’ve been drawing for two years now and have never taken a lesson. I’m drawn to surrealism—it helps me tap into my subconscious and process emotions and trauma.

I’m not fully independent yet. I’ve applied for disability and I’m still waiting. But I’m on the right meds, I’m healing, and on April 2, I’ll celebrate two years of sobriety.

Thank you for taking the time to hear my story.
