Remembering the war is hard to avoid with gunshots outside my window. When I sweep my sidewalk and hear gunfire, I hit the deck. Losing balance a lot can be hard with vertigo, but spinal column damage has weakened me. I hope to continue to recover from damaged lungs from the burn pits in Afghanistan.
I have overcome drinking for five years, eat healthy, walk to church, and sing. The Creator teaches me what I need to survive sadness.
We recover from alcohol dependency, if we are serious about it. PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) slips away, and old things are made new; if we are willing to grow spiritually, we will know a new freedom and new happiness. I am but a vessel for Christ, the son of the living God. The snakes of tremors will subside, and even a gorgon can find peace and see colors of life.
I started drawing my dog Sparky in elementary school in Montgomery in 1975. I would enter Halloween poster contests. Later, I became an illustrator for the Army and drew maps. I find peace in mixing paints and listening to music at Council on Substance Abuse classes. I enjoy art because it lowers blood pressure and teaches patience.
