Losing my dad was one of the hardest things I’ve ever faced. But through recovery, support from the staff, and coming to ADS, I’ve learned how to use coping skills when I feel angry or overwhelmed. Art is one of the things that brings me back to a happy place. It makes me feel calm, accomplished, and proud of myself. Living with bipolar disorder, art also helps me set boundaries and express myself safely.

I’ve loved art since I was a child—my mom and grandparents taught me. I especially enjoy working with watercolors. I’ve been part of the art workshop at ADS for a long time now.

One of the highlights of my art journey was when Lieutenant Governor Lucy Baxley bought my first painting. I visited the State House as an advocate for Integrea, and I saw my painting hanging in her office. That moment made me feel so seen and proud. I hope people feel that same joy when they see my work in the showcase.

Stop Stigma

I’ve been diagnosed with schizophrenia, and I’m proud to say I’m a veteran who receives services through the VA. I’m also proud of the fact that I live independently and have been able to maintain stability.

Drawing helps me calm down and meditate. It’s become one of my most important coping skills. When I draw, it helps me focus on the task at hand instead of the symptoms that might be bothering me.

The Lady in Black and White

My name is Gabrielle. I’ve been diagnosed with anxiety and bipolar disorder, and while I’ve faced many challenges, I remind myself that I’m not alone. I’m a self-taught artist, and I use painting and drawing to express emotions and to stay centered.

Painting gives my imagination room to roam and brings me comfort. I especially love creating portraits and abstract pieces. I’m learning to navigate my mental health through a combination of medication, painting, support groups at the 1920 Club, and different social activities. The Lady in Black and White is a reflection of strength, emotion, and grace through contrast.

Happy Bunny

My name is Latrice. I recently had stomach surgery, and I’m recovering well. I’ve become more independent and am now doing things for myself that I couldn’t do before.

I’m especially proud of my daughter—she’s 17 and a junior at Opelika High School. Managing my mental health through medication and support from ADS has helped me become more stable and focused. Art gives me a sense of purpose. I can express myself, reflect on how far I’ve come, and feel joy through the creative process.

I first started doing art in school, and I continue to learn by watching art shows on TV and attending workshops at ADS. Art relaxes me and makes me smile. It gives me a strong sense of independence, and I’m excited to keep growing—one of my new goals is to learn how to do portraits.

I am focused, I am strong, and I am moving forward.

Spring has Sprung

My name is Jercolbie, and I was born with a hole in my heart. Doctors didn’t think I would live long, but I am now 36 and have a big heart! I live with Cerebral Palsy, which affects my ability to walk and use my arms and hands. Sometimes driving my chair is difficult, but I keep pushing forward and strive to do my best in everything I do.

I’ve faced many challenges in my life, including learning to write and improving my arm strength. With assistance, I’ve made progress and am now able to communicate more clearly. Through physical therapy, I’ve learned to reach and grasp with my hands, allowing me to do the things I love—like painting.

At first, I thought becoming an artist would be hard, but it became easier with the help of my occupational therapist, Kimberly, and a talented artist named Bunnie. They helped me extend my paintbrush so I could better reach the canvas. Painting has become my favorite form of art—it’s calming, peaceful, and relaxing. No matter how tough things get, I know I can overcome the obstacles in my life, and art helps me do just that.

Shadow Espie

I’ve faced many obstacles in my life, enduring various types of abuse and pain. Growing up, I didn’t understand why I had mental health struggles or that I even had them. After the loss of my grandfather, who was like a father to me, I felt isolated, and people didn’t understand why I acted differently. It wasn’t until I joined Mountain Lakes that I began to understand my struggles. My abuser controlled many aspects of my life, restricting me from traveling or seeking help.

When I learned about my mental health disorders and began medication, it felt like I was seeing the world in a whole new light. My recovery has been a long journey, but after almost 11 years, I finally feel like I am my own person, despite living with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).

The art I create is inspired by characters I've dreamed about or seen throughout my life, as well as the worlds they inhabit. I also draw from my own mental health experiences and the different alters I live with. As a graphic artist, I primarily work with full-color illustrations because I believe real life doesn’t have black lines, and I prefer to avoid them in my work. I was originally self-taught but am now pursuing my bachelor’s degree in art at a university.

Broken Promises

Hi, my name is Harmony. I live with Borderline Personality Disorder, PTSD, Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and ADHD. My childhood wasn’t easy—we moved a lot. When I was seven, my mom married a man who was an alcoholic. When I turned eight, he began sexually abusing me and my sister, and it continued until I was twelve.

When I told my mom, she didn’t believe me. After that, I started severely self-harming and attempting to take my own life. By thirteen, I was in and out of psych wards and put on several medications.

At fourteen, I made a decision—I didn’t want to live in hospitals anymore. I started working to improve my mental health. That’s when I discovered drawing. It started as a coping skill, but I quickly fell in love with it. I’ve been refining my skills ever since.

Now, I attend the University of Montevallo and draw as much as I can about the things I’ve been through. Broken Promises is a piece about the aftermath of not being protected as a child.

Through my art, I hope to inspire others. Standing next to a piece that reflects what I’ve overcome—and knowing I created it—means everything to me.

Under the Sea

My name is Ashley. I hear voices and make things with yarn here in Northwest Alabama. Early-onset schizophrenia changed the course of my life. I lost everything I had and everything I had dreamed of—college, a traditional job, a family.

But like the crafty women in my family, I turned to yarn. I taught myself to knit and crochet. The rhythm and repetition help quiet the voices in my head. Creating art is what keeps me grounded. Turning yarn into something beautiful feels like making sense out of the chaos inside me.

Even though my life doesn’t look like what I once hoped for, I’m happy with the life and family I have now.

I’m a self-taught artist and activist, sharing my mental health story through the RESPECT Initiative of Alabama. My afghans have been featured in galleries in Birmingham, Montgomery, and Atlanta. Want one?

Twice as Nice

My name is Shawn, and I live with bipolar disorder. This illness has made it difficult for me to focus, and for a long time, life felt unclear. But through recovery, I’ve overcome many sad days and learned to find a brighter outlook. I started my recovery when I joined a support group with NAMI. Now, I live in New House and am working towards becoming more independent.

Art has been a key part of my journey. I taught myself to draw and participated in the art workshop at ADS, where I’ve been challenged to improve. The workshop helped me think more clearly and gave me a creative outlet to express myself. With the support of my peers, doctors, and staff at ADS, I’ve learned to manage my life better.

Art helps me relax, refresh my thinking, and boost my confidence. I enjoy making choices in my artwork, from sketching to coloring, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to showcase my abilities.

Dark Side of Me

Losing both of my grandparents was one of the hardest things I’ve ever gone through. The grief cut deep. But art helped me cope—it helped me stay focused, express my emotions, and begin to heal. One of my biggest challenges has been managing my emotions, but with help from the staff at ADS and the coping skills I’ve learned, I’m doing better.

Art gives me a sense of control and independence. I taught myself how to draw when I was little, and I still love painting because it calms me down. I took art classes in grammar and high school, and being part of the art program at ADS has helped me improve even more.

My artwork shows what it feels like when I fall into a dark place—when I forget to walk around the “black hole.” But through creating, I remind myself I’m capable of finding the light again.

The Faces of Mental Health

This piece was created collaboratively by a group of adults receiving acute inpatient treatment at Whitfield Regional Hospital in Demopolis, Alabama. During art therapy, the group came together to explore their personal stories and the hope that keeps them moving forward. For many, their stories are deeply tied to their roots in Alabama’s Black Belt region—a connection that is both grounding and inspiring.

The artwork features dual faces shared by a participant living with bipolar disorder, expressing the emotional contrast within their experience. Beneath the faces, water and trees appear—symbols of calm contributed by an individual with schizophrenia, who finds peace in nature. On the right side, a delicate flower is juxtaposed with jagged, sharp edges, representing the intrusive paranoia and reflection that often coexist. This piece is a shared portrait of vulnerability, resilience, and hope.

Lost Souls

My story is simple. I suffer from PTSD, anxiety, and depression—all of which started in my 30s. My ex-husband was the beginning of it all, and things only intensified after serving three combat deployments to Iraq (two for 12 months and one for 18 months).

He was never physically abusive, but sometimes I think that might have been easier to recognize. For six long years, he controlled everything—even what I ate. I had to weigh myself every morning, and if I was over 105 pounds, I was considered “fat.” He was a narcissist who twisted everything and made me feel like it was my fault.

In 2006, I finally found the courage to stand up to him. It’s taken a long time to feel even somewhat comfortable in my own skin. The PTSD stems from both him and the deployments. No one can truly understand deployment unless they’ve been there—lying in your cot not knowing whether the sound you hear is a mortar coming in or one of our own rounds going out. And it’s crazy, but over time, you get used to it. You learn the difference.

I was one of the lucky ones—I made it home. But honestly, I don’t think we ever really come home. I’ve been retired and living back in Alabama since 2012, less than five miles from what I call home. Still, every day is a struggle just to get up and keep moving. Most days, I feel alone in a crowded room.

And yet—I’m still one of the lucky ones. I’ve raised an amazing young man by myself, and he now attends UAB. I’m currently attending the University of Montevallo and will graduate in Fall 2025 with my BS in Art and a minor in Psychology. My next goal is to earn my master’s in counseling and become an art therapist so I can help other veterans—so there’s less need to make pieces like Lost Souls.

The struggles are real, even when they’re invisible. I’ve lost far more battles since coming home than I ever did in combat. This story is mine, but it’s not mine alone. Too many soldiers come back haunted, needing help—but the stigma around asking for it makes some give up instead.

My name is Rebecca, and I’ve been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I’ve faced a lot of challenges, including a time when I was homeless. But with support and treatment, I’ve been stable on medications for the past ten years.

Now that I’m well, I teach Sunday school and live a full, productive life—thanks to God.

I first got into art in seventh grade when I took an art class. After that, I started teaching myself. I really enjoy painting, and I’ve learned a lot just by looking at pictures in books. Art has become a way for me to express myself and cope with life’s ups and downs.

The Elephants

Hi, I’m Jeff. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at a young age, but before that, I struggled with a lot of depression and anger. I didn’t understand why I felt the way I did until I received my diagnosis. I'm self-taught and discovered that painting helps calm me down and manage the highs and lows of my condition.

Art gives me a way to express things that I can’t always put into words. Painting animals especially helps me face daily challenges and communicate in a meaningful way. I'm proud to say I'm in recovery, and art is a big part of that journey.

I live with bipolar disorder with psychosis, and for a long time I struggled to accept my diagnosis. I made some bad choices and ended up in a group home to avoid being homeless. Now, I’m sober, I take my medications, and I attend day treatment. I’ve also made a lot of new friends.

I’ve always liked to draw and paint and have been pretty good at it. I enjoy making art that brings joy to other people.

My name is Jhmiyas, and I am an artist. I started doing art in high school, and I’ve always loved it. Art has helped me overcome my anger, especially when I feel upset. It helps me relax and express my emotions in a healthy way.

My recovery challenges have included learning to defend myself in a responsible manner. Now, I feel happier and more connected with others. I taught myself how to create art, and the art workshops have made both my mother and me proud. Krabbie Patties

I’ve faced a lot of obstacles in life. My parents divorced when I was younger, and we moved around a lot. That made it hard to keep old friends and make new ones. The biggest challenge has been living with anxiety and a mood disorder.

I’ve been focusing on recovery—taking my meds and going to day treatment. One day, I hope to live on my own and keep working toward a healthy lifestyle.

I learned art through school classes, especially in middle and high school. I also picked up a lot from watching my dad—he used to draw Ninja Turtles and superheroes. Art is how I express myself, and it’s something I like to do when I’m bored or just need to chill.

The Darkest House in Colors

My name is Damion. I live with PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Normal life situations can be overwhelming for me, especially when dealing with loss or difficult emotions. For years, I struggled with feeling like I wasn’t enough, especially for my family and my daughter. But through my journey, I’ve come to realize that I am enough just as I am, and it’s my poor decisions—not my worth—that kept me from seeing my potential.

Art has been a constant in my life since I was 13. At 18, I started teaching myself to draw and paint, using it as a way to express my perspective and show the world the beauty I see. Art allows me to escape and express myself in a positive way, providing a space where I don’t have to make the same bad choices I once did. It’s my form of self-expression, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.

There is a ME in Autism

My name is Harrison, and I am 6 years old. I was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at the age of 3. During my early years, I experienced some milestone regression and was nearly non-verbal at one point. However, I am much more than my diagnosis. There is and will always be a "ME" in Autism.

With the help of my mother and father, I created a piece titled "There is a ME in Autism" for the 2025 Capitol Showcase Art Exhibition. I will be graduating from Kindergarten at Hutchens Elementary School in Mobile County, where I received A & B Honor Roll certificates for both the 1st and 2nd quarters. I also completed Governor Kay Ivey's 2024 Summer Reading Challenge and received the Courage (2024) and Kindness (2025) awards.

I am a self-taught artist, and I love being creative with paints. While some people with ASD may have sensitivities to sensory stimuli, I do not experience discomfort with tactile sensations. In fact, I seek out slimy and wet textures, which makes using paint especially comforting for me. I hope that everyone enjoys my art and that it speaks to you.

Please Stay

My life has been filled with constant change and challenges. Growing up, I moved often and met many people, but that came with a deep sense of abandonment. After my parents’ divorce when I was three, I constantly felt like I had to choose between them—and whatever I chose, it felt wrong. I spent years striving to be “enough”—to earn attention and love through achievements. But that attention never came.

In high school, I realized I had been living for the wrong reasons. That’s when the pandemic hit. After graduation, I paused my life to care for my sick grandparents, who both passed away before 2023. I felt like I was in “airplane mode”—emotionally numb, unmotivated, and detached from myself. In 2023–2024, I was diagnosed with Mixed Anxiety and Depression Disorder (MADD). Since then, therapy and medication have helped me slowly rebuild, one step at a time.

Art has always been a part of my life—it started with my father. Creating together was our special bond, and through it, I found a sense of peace. Although I stopped after facing bullying in middle school, I picked it back up at the end of my sophomore year and haven’t stopped since. My art is self-taught, personal, and reflective of my feelings in the moment. It’s my safe space—a place where I connect with others and express what words often cannot.

I hope my work creates space for others to feel seen, understood, and less alone. We all deserve a safe place, and if mine can help someone else find theirs, then I’ve accomplished something real.

Since the early 1990s, I’ve been deeply involved in the HIV community as an advocate and leader. My name is Sylvia. Art has helped me find peace and relax, especially during times of great stress. I first learned art in 3rd grade, but for a long time, I stopped. It was difficult, but I worked through it. Later, I took art at Southern Union, and that’s when I truly reconnected with my passion.

Art has taught me not only to stand up for myself but also to help others. My recovery journey began with Carole Estridge, the founder of the Visionary Guild for Mentally Ill Artists. It was through art that I learned to focus and appreciate the peace it brings.

One of my most meaningful memories is when my first director at ADS, Laurie Bathoone, saw the butterfly I painted. She told me, “Sylvia, yours is better than the one you drew as a still artist.” That praise gave me confidence.

As a peer support specialist, I was able to bring together artists from all walks of life. I’ve been inspired by many of them, like one teacher who had Down syndrome and another who lost all four limbs but still taught art. Their resilience and passion pushed me to keep striving, and I am grateful to share my own art now.

One of my biggest joys is painting on glass, a skill I’ve recently rediscovered. I’m thankful for the opportunity to share my experiences and the growth I’ve experienced through art at Integrea Mental Health Services.

Making Our Mark

Making Our Mark was created by individuals attending Vivian B. Adams School and represents the individuality and creativity of each person here. Since 1971, people with intellectual disabilities from Barbour, Coffee, Dale, Henry, Houston, and Pike Counties have been making their mark on our school and our community.

Each of us had the opportunity to choose a brush and a color to make our own mark on the canvas. At VBAS, we believe art connects us to new possibilities—and Making Our Mark is a celebration of that vision.

With my occupational therapist Kimberly’s support, I learned to drive my wheelchair on my own. I’ve also worked hard to feed myself at home. Over time, I taught myself how to paint, draw, and color using adaptive equipment. My teachers help by taping down my paper so it doesn’t move while I create. BPD Puppet

What’s it like to have borderline personality disorder? It’s like riding an emotional rollercoaster—one moment I’m on a high, and the next everything spirals out of control. Managing BPD is a daily struggle, especially when it comes to controlling emotions and staying grounded in reality. One of the hardest things is feeling isolated in your thoughts. I’ve dealt with that for most of my life. I realized I needed help after a moment when I unintentionally hurt a friend. Since then, I’ve worked hard every day, using what I’ve learned to cope and grow.

My dad was my first art inspiration. Growing up, he was all I had to look up to, and that’s where my love for creating began. As I got older, I wanted to make art that had meaning—art that invites people to find their own interpretations and feelings. I love when viewers discover hidden details and try to decode the story behind a piece. Through my work, I want people to feel what it’s like to live in my mind.

My name is David. I have schizophrenia and dyslexia, so please forgive any lack of professionalism. Honestly, I don’t even know what “normal” is. I didn’t learn how to read until second grade. Teachers told my mom to pull me out of school because I would never learn. But I did learn—and I graduated high school.

I’ve been using drugs since I was 13. Eventually, I burned every bridge and ended up homeless. I’ve seen the worst of humanity. I’ve even witnessed someone being killed over ten dollars.

Things began to change when I moved into a group home and started drawing. I’ve been drawing for two years now and have never taken a lesson. I’m drawn to surrealism—it helps me tap into my subconscious and process emotions and trauma.

I’m not fully independent yet. I’ve applied for disability and I’m still waiting. But I’m on the right meds, I’m healing, and on April 2, I’ll celebrate two years of sobriety.

Static: Dissociation

Looking back to my earliest memories, I can’t recall a day of my life where I didn’t feel severely anxious. Over the last 15 years, I have been diagnosed with many anxiety-related disorders – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Complex PTSD, Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, and others. Additionally, symptoms of Inattentive ADHD often leave me feeling severely anxious and overwhelmed.

My anxiety looks a myriad of ways. It can leave me paralyzed with panic, hyperventilating to the sound of my racing thoughts. Sometimes it propels me into productivity, hyper-fixating on marking off items on a never-ending list of things I have labeled as urgent. It can leave me irritable, sensitive to my environment, others’ emotions, or the feeling of my own skin. Often, it triggers a musical performance of my own tears, with promise of an encore.

From a young age, I have experienced dissociation in times of extreme anxiety or stress. What began as a trauma response is now induced by my most unwanted intrusive thoughts. It is difficult to think rationally or regain control when my mind is repeatedly communicating defeat or a perceived threat to my emotional stability.

Static is a four-piece series that developed from a Wings Across Alabama art support group meeting I attended in 2022. It started with me attempting to portray my most intense dissociative experience that occurred earlier that year. The screen represents the constant noise in my head. There is no off button. There is no power cord to unplug.

The final piece, Static: Dissociation, portrays how I often feel when I am disassociating. I move through these realms in my mind. The darker the colors get, the more disconnected I become – moving into a state of total darkness, where reality is lost. The background represents the dizziness I experience when I begin to move into this space, blurring my surroundings until all I see is a static gray.

Creating the Static series has allowed me to process my emotions and experiences in a healthy way. I have historically used writing as a primary form of expression; but I have found there is healing power in allowing myself to push through my artistic fears and express myself in a way I’m not always able to through words alone.

Fire

I was the captain of my high school football team and was planning to play in college. After graduation, everything changed. My friends all went their own ways, and I felt really alone. I started having symptoms and was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder when I was 20.

Thankfully, I’ve always had a supportive family. I got right with God, moved into a semi-independent group home, and I’ve been staying out of the hospital.

Art, to me, is like ancient philosophy. I enjoy learning about art history—especially from the 1500s. I may not be an exceptional artist, but this drawing is an expression of something I relate to deeply.
